A japanese symphony? There is no connection, not a single reference made to the great japanese composers like Yamada, Hashimoto, Ifukube, Akutagawa etc which shaped the (first western influenced) late-romantic style and formed it to (independent modern) typical japanese music. Most likely there may be a relationship to the works of Mayuzumi. Wondering about this, Wikipedia just told me, that G.-M. studied two years in Tokyo from 1952 to 1954. So he took this "Symphonie japonaise" as a souvenir from there... - Always interesting and worthwhile is to discover japanese symphonic composers!

Sister Rosetta Tharp has a very interesting biography. She was an extremely popular gospel artist before WW2 that played country blues on an acoustic guitar. During the war, she was one of two gospel artists that recorded songs on the military's Victory Label that were played for the servicemen on the radio. After the war she was gifted with one of the first electric guitars. She experimented on it to charge her sound. All early rock & roll guitarists said they copied her riffs.
